Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean to be in a “Professional” Fraternity?

Being a brother in Alpha Chi Sigma expands upon the theme of community found in service or social fraternities by promoting a particularly strong focus in the chemical sciences and in professionalism. To be in a professional chemistry fraternity means standing by our ideals, and beyond that, integrating those ideals in our professional ambitions, our academic achievements, and our social interactions. To be in a professional fraternity means embracing and taking an active part in each other’s passions, pursuits, and potentials. To be in a professional fraternity means being a leader in a world of leaders, and it is through leadership, professional development, and networking opportunities we offer that allows you to catapult yourself into your career.

Why should i join?

Alpha Chi Sigma provides a wealth of opportunities for professional networking and career development with alumni and active brothers who share a common interest in science. We regularly hold workshops regarding resume building, professional development, and undergraduate research. Bringing like-minded students together, we take advantage of both the similarities and differences, and utilize that diversity to advance and enhance each other’s futures. But more importantly, we forge lifelong friendships, provide constant community support while you pursue your professional ambitions, and offer you the opportunities to explore and expand your personal and professional capacities.

Who can Join Alpha Chi Sigma?

Any and all undergraduate students from all schools and majors with an appreciation for chemistry, an interest in professional development, and has taken one college-level chemistry course (including AP Chemistry) are eligible to apply for membership.

Are Women Able to Join The Fraternity?

Yes, and in fact, discrimination based on race, religion, sex, ethnicity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, sexual orientation, gender expression, or gender identity is prohibited. We encourage everyone to apply!

Am I able to join if I am involved in Greek life Already?

At Boston University, membership in multiple professional fraternities is not allowed; however, if you are affiliated with a social or service fraternity, you are eligible to join Alpha Chi Sigma.

What is a Bid?

A bid is an invitation to join the fraternity as a Pledge. Bids are given after completion of Rush requirements and an interview screening.

What is a Pledge?

A pledge is a rising member of the Fraternity, one who has accepted their bid and is committed to strive to become a Brother. The pledge process takes place over the duration of a few months after bids are accepted until Initiation. Pledges are expected to follow expectations for professional interaction with brothers, complete their own set of requirements that introduce them to brothers and teach professional skills, collaborate to complete group requirements to build team building and leadership skills, and attend weekly pledge classes to learn the history of the fraternity.

What if I don’t receive a bid after rush?

If you believe that Alpha Chi Sigma is the community for you, we strongly encourage you to apply for membership again in a later semester.

Does Alpha Chi Sigma haze?

No. Requirements for the Rush and Pledge process and Brother activities are designed to stimulate a sense of community, professionalism, and brotherhood with fellow Rushees, Pledges, and Brothers.

What is the time commitment for Pledging?

The duration of pledging varies per semester; however, pledges are expected to attend and fulfill the mandatory requirements throughout the pledging process. Although it may seem rigorous, the pledging process is ultimately a unique, invaluable experience — undergone by all initiated Brothers — that expands the breadth of your character, capacity for commitment, and depth for determination.
